Ever since his childhood in one of Ohio’s most haunted houses, writer director Drew Daywalt has been writing escapist fantasy and building worlds of his own. Mike Venezia was born in New York City and, when he was 10 years old, his family moved to the Chicago area. In high school, Mike took all the art classes he could get his hands on. After graduating high school, Mike went on to study art history, painting, photography, sculpture and graphic design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received his BFA.
Mike then began a 33-year career in advertising at Chicago’s largest ad agency, Leo Burnett Company. It was during this time Mike began writing and illustrating his children’s books. To date, Mike has written and illustrated over 120 non-fiction books introducing kids to the World’s Greatest Artists, Composers, Inventors & Scientists, and U.S. Presidents. He has worked on his writing and illustrating full-time since 2001.
Mike believes the best way to introduce children to art and artists is through fun. If kids can look at art in a fun way and think of artists as real people, the exciting world of art will be open to them for the rest of their lives.

Janine is a K-12 certified Visual Arts teacher in Byron Center, Michigan. She is a graduate from The University of Michigan-Flint and Western Michigan University. She earned her Masters of Art in Art Education and has been practicing her craft in the Middle School art room since 2004. She is passionate about technology, choice, and presenting and sharing ideas from her classroom.
To change or not to change? The choice is yours. Janine says that changing to choice-based curriculum has been the most impactful thing she has ever done in her classroom. Moving away from the narrow view of what we are supposed to teach and what students are supposed to learn has transformed her teaching. Instead of making choices for her students, Janine has challenged herself to instead give students the chance to find their own voices and connect to their work in meaningful ways. In this presentation, she will share insights about what got her over the fear of change and what happened to her teaching when she said “yes” to choice.

Nic Hahn is an AOE Instructor and authors the popular blog, Mini Matisse, where she shares creative ideas and positive attitudes about teaching. Nic has worked with all types of learners (pre-school though adults) and has discovered she loves teaching at all levels.
Do you want your students to love, no scratch that… ADORE your class? Give them SPE’s (Short Positive Experiences). We want our students to be excited to learn not only the process of art but also Art History, concepts, and more. When covering concepts, students are often asked to take long notes. When researching Art History, students might be asked to write a 3-page paper and create a diorama that could take weeks to complete. Not when you are teaching under the idea of SPE’s. When teaching SPE style, teachers are giving short lessons, really short. They are making sure their students are smiling and having fun. Teachers are covering a little at a time so that their students are exposed to many processes, mediums, concepts, and big ideas in Art. The idea is to create a hunger for more, by only giving a little at a time in a way that creates a happy experience for all.
Julie Read is an internationally known artist and the founder of the online hub Portfolio Oomph: Getting You Into Art College. She has worked for 17 years in postsecondary education and art colleges in Scotland, teaching and interviewing applicants at Edinburgh College of Art for 9 years. Her passion and mission is assisting students in creating a killer art portfolio as they prepare for college. Julie has extensive experience of supporting students in creating portfolios and interviewing students at the college level, also creating course materials and tutoring students in an online environment.

Luke proudly teaches at his high school alma mater in Saint Ansgar, Iowa. His diverse background in visual arts, language arts, and sports science guide his character development and leadership courses as well as his junior high and high school visual arts curriculum. Outside of teaching and coaching, Luke enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and two incredible children.
