Art educators must not only be at the table when discussing project-based curriculum, we must be the leaders!

Through this class, you will research the most popular collaborative education models today, encompassing both school-wide initiatives and project work exclusive to the art room. Topics explored include Design Thinking, Makerspaces, STEAM/STEM, PBL (Project-Based Learning), School-Wide Collaborative Projects, Arts Integration, and much more!

Participants will leave the class with a better understanding of project-based work that will benefit an individual program, as well as a plan to actively re-design and customize a collaborative curriculum. Course Breakdown

Week 1
Week 1: The Future of Education
  1. Research the importance of hands on creative learning, including the 4 C’s (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Communication).
  2. Design a School-Wide Collaborative art project that will get your students talking about art.
Week 2
Week 2: Inside the Art Room
  1. Transform a unit you currently teach it into a project-based study.
  2. Explore Makerspaces and Design Thinking.
  3. Create resources to implement one of these your art room.
Week 3
Week 3: School-Wide Initiatives
  1. Research STEAM and how the arts can play an important role in this model.
  2. Form an action plan to implement arts integration in your school.
Week 4
Week 4: Implementation Plans
  1. Brainstorm solutions to common management and organization issues with project work.
  2. Design an assessment that presents student learning in a positive light.
Week 5
Week 5: Road Map and Final Toolkit
  1. Create a road map to organize the implementation of your favorite methods.
  2. Create a final toolkit that summarizes your learning to use after the class.

1. Research

Watch case studies of art teachers implementing these programs in their art room today and explore a host of resources as you delve into the ‘nuts and bolts’ of each program.

2. Discussion

Write 2-3 paragraphs discussing the pros and cons of each of these initiatives. Discuss which one you might prefer to try in your art room.

3. Creation

Create your own Design Challenge Kit ready to take back and use in your classroom immediately!
