My students consistently rate this as one of their favorite lessons of the entire school year. As a teacher, I love that I can connect it to a variety of different cultures while having students broaden their technical skills. Although it’s listed as a 3-5 lesson, I’ve also had great success with it at the second grade level. Having students add a few plain coils on the first day helps them build their confidence and capabilities to get really creative on days two and three. Make the lesson simpler by limiting the decorative coils to swirls. Extend the lesson by challenging students to create a bottom that is not round, or challenging students to write words with their coils.
