This lesson was one of my kindergartners’ favorites last year. They loved manipulating the clay and using the texture tools to add all sorts of fun textures to their pumpkins. To make this lesson a success, there’s no need to buy expensive texture stamps. Sticks, shells, buttons or marker caps could all create wonderful textures. To take this lesson a step further for older students, you could have them observe real pumpkins first, or challenge them to divide their pumpkins and create specific, different textures in each section. This lesson could also adapt well to different seasons as you could create textured leaves, snowflakes or flowers.
