This lesson was the first I ever developed and taught as an elementary school art teacher. My fifth graders ate up the “secret code” aspect of using Maya glyphs to represent the sounds in their names. They were also very proud to achieve such cool effects with colored pencils. The beautiful results make using a lot of pressure with the colored pencils worth the effort. If you are unfamiliar with Maya glyphs, a quick Google search will pull up tons of great resources you can use.
