    I plan on doing this with my 5th graders. I think they will enjoy the hand building of clay! I was wondering, do you keep the newspaper inside the animal and let it burn off from firing in the kiln?

      Yes, that is exactly what you should do! The newspaper allows the clay to get a nice rounded, hollow shape, and it will burn out with no problems!
