This lesson is a great way to introduce or review cool colors with young students. It’s also a great way to introduce watercolor paint. Starting off the lesson with your favorite children’s book about fish is a great way to engage students. Try The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen, Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert, or Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle. As you read, have students notice the patterns and designs on the fish and the cool colors present in the illustrations.
From there, you can take this lesson in many directions. Have students draw from observation to create realistic fish and make a connection to science. Or, have students fill their fish with patterns and line designs. You could even have students create their own fish stories when they’re finished. The possibilities are endless!
