Color theory is a common theme in nearly every art curriculum. A few years ago I stumbled across this cute idea on Pinterest. After poor results with my original project mixing primary, secondary, and intermediate colors, this approach was quite a success! Students grow extremely familiar with color theory and color vocabulary while creating this fun twist on a color wheel! To take this project a step further, coordinate it with an ocean study and have students draw realistic ocean fish.

I did the above lesson with my 4th graders! It took four 45 minute classes, but all were very creative! We made a monochromatic painting for the water, a value painting in neutrals for the fish or sand, and a color wheel painting for the tiny fish and underwater objects. Check them out on Artsonia!!
