This lesson is a great way to introduce portrait drawing with middle school students. Students are able to make a realistic drawing with a fun twist to it. They can use a photograph of themselves, a peer or even a famous person. Make sure the photograph is half the size of the final. I find it works best to use a 4×6 photograph and an 8×12 final paper. Make sure their grid is actuate and numbered before they start drawing. The best part about this project is its high success rate. Students feel less pressure and stress when they draw using a grid. These portraits look stunning matted on a piece of colored construction paper.
