Hey there! I’m Debi West, and I have been teaching children through the vehicle of the visual arts for 25 years! I spent most of these years in Gwinnett County Georgia, a suburb outside of Atlanta. I spent the last 10 years of my classroom career as Department Chair, NAHS Co-Sponsor, and Art Educator at North Gwinnett High School. I have 14 years of experience at the elementary level as well and loved spending all of these years in the classroom. I am currently retired and pursuing my dream of consulting and working with teachers to implement PBL learning.
I graduated with a BA in studio art from the University of South Carolina and then received my teaching degree from the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. When we moved to Georgia, I went back to school and received my Masters in Art Education from the University of Georgia, my Specialist degree from UGA, and hope to complete my Ph.D. in language and literacy with a leadership add-on from UGA…soon!
I am also a huge advocate for art education and can’t imagine not being involved in my state and national art education associations. I am past President of the Georgia Art Education Association and just rolled off of the NAEA board as the elected Southeastern Region Vice President.
I am happily married to Chuck and am the proud mom of Croy and Carson – my living art! We spend our summers in Hilton Head, SC, and I try to relive my old surfing days, walk the beach as much as possible with my dog Coda, and make art whenever I get a free moment. We also love to travel and love SEC football, spending most of our fall following our 2 favorite teams (see above!).
I am beyond excited to begin this new journey with AOE since my passion is art education. I find true joy in working with teachers and can’t wait to share my experience with you all – my motto is “Together, We ‘ART’ Better,” so stay in touch!
