The Element

The-Element

Credits: 3 Credits
PD Hours: 120 Hours
Length: 5 Weeks

As art teachers, we see talents and passions in our students that may not be recognized in the traditional classroom setting. In fact, growing up, maybe you experienced your own creativity and passions becoming stifled by the system. Instead, you may have been asked to “improve your math scores” instead of building upon your true creative talent, whatever that may have been. Sound familiar?

Over the course of our lives, we spend countless hours trying to concentrate on and improve our personal weaknesses. What would happen if we instead focused our time and energy on becoming experts in the areas we’re already good at? Your ‘Element’ is where personal passion meets natural talent. In this course, participants will learn from author and creativity expert Sir Kenneth Robinson’s book “The Element.”

Participants will work through exercises that help them define their own ‘Element’. In addition to self-discovery, participants will learn how they can bring out the unique talents of students in their own classes, and help to nurture and flourish these abilities for life-long success in today’s ever changing world.

Participants in this course will need a copy of the book “The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything” by Ken Robinson. (ISBN: 978-0143116738)

Notes from past participants:

This is the first on-line class I have taken and I appreciate the opportunity to fully participate on my own time, but with deadlines. I found the discussions with classmates even more rewarding than reading “The Element” – which was excellent. I’m impressed with this format for learning. Thanks for exceeding my expectations!

- Lynn L.

Great class, leads to lots of self discovery – which will benefit my career and my students greatly!

- Amy M.

The class touched on many things that art teachers live daily for both their students as well as their own art work. I enjoyed Sir Ken Robinson’s writing in the book and was introduced to the concept of a vision board. The class expanded my thinking about creativity, and gave me ideas about working in my classroom to help children to realize their own Element.

- Angela R.
