AOE Conference Winter 2014
Have you attended an Art Ed conference lately? If you’re like most Art Teachers – probably not. Hi, I’m Jessica Balsley, founder of the Art of Education. Attending Art Ed conferences can be incredibly rewarding, but after attending more than I can count over the past few years and talking with hundreds of Art Teachers just like you, I came away with a several questions that I think deserve answers:
- Why aren’t all conference presentations high quality, engaging, and relevant to me?
- Why should Art Teachers have to spend hundreds of dollars on travel, lodging, dining, for every conference they attend?
- Why do Art Teachers have to regularly skip professional experiences simply because they have young children at home, or unavoidable family or community obligations?
- Why, as empowered education professionals, do we have to waste time going to presentations that aren’t relevant to us?
- Why should art teachers settle for just one local or national PD opportutnity each year? Why can’t multiple opportunities be easily accessible to everyone?
As I considered these questions again and again, I decided that what Art Teachers really
needed deserved, was an Art Ed Conference for the 21st century! The conference had to be online so there was no traveling, lodging, or dining expenses… (huge money saver!) It needed to be a conference you could attend from the comfort of home – in your PJ’s if you wanted! Secondly, the presentations needed to be Ridiculously Relevant, the price had to be affordable for everyone, and Art Teachers attending needed to walk away inspired and empowered to start their next teaching year on the right foot!
I’m proud to say that last July each of these goals was met as we held the first-ever AOE Online Conference. With over 700 Art Teachers from around the world in attendance, the conference went perfectly and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Today, I’m very excited to announce the second-ever online conference for Art Teachers – the AOE Online Conference – Winter 2014! Get all the details below. I’ll see you on January 25th for the big day!
See you at the conference!
Every AOE Conference Attendee will receive an official certificate of participation documenting their time spent on professional development during the conference. You can use this certificate to present to your school, translating into PD points or to log PD hours. 6 hours total. Each certificate will carry the AOE seal and official signature.
What you can expect:
However, since the conference is held online there are many benefits you could never expect from a traditional conference! The most obvious example is that with the AOE Online Conference, there’s no reason to pay for lodging, dining, or travel expenses! You can sit back and enjoy all the great inspiring content from the comfort of home!
Beyond the travel benefits, you can live chat with presenters during their presentations, interact in forums with other attendees, and some of your favorite Art Ed bloggers will be presenting. Plus, all paid participants will get a full year of exclusive access to detailed printables, presentations, videos and other conference materials through a password protected website.
The conference will take place on January 25th. Attendees are welcome to come and go as they please. Watch one presentation live, take a break, get a snack, come back a bit later for another presentation. Each presentation will be pre-scheduled so you can plan out your day how you see fit! The best part? You get to watch EVERY 10-15 min. presentation – there’s no need to pick and choose! Think of it as our very own Art Ed ‘TED Talks!’
- More Handouts and Downloads

The AOE Online Conference is a breath of fresh air… a simple, affordable, and fast registration, and you’re set! Sit back on the day of the conference and enjoy Ridiculously Relevant™ Professional Development from the comfort of home (at a fraction of the price!)

Would you like to attend the AOE Online Conference, but aren’t sure if you’ll be able to watch live on January 25th? No worries! We will be recording the entire AOE Online Conference, including each individual presentation so you can take your time, and watch them later at your own speed via a password-protected site accessible only to paid attendees. Just sign-up and purchase the conference like a normal attendee and we’ll send you the necessary links after the recordings are posted.
In July of 2013 The Art of Education put on the first-ever online conference for Art Teachers. It was a watershed event with over 700 art teachers attending from around the world. After the conference came to a close, attendees were very willing to share their opinions and tell us it was some of the best PD they had ever received! Below is just a sample of the amazing responses we received after the event – clearly Art Teachers are hungry for this kind of convenient and relevant and convenient PD.
A Message from the Founder:
How do I sign up?
Register before Jan. 13th to secure your spot in the conference. First 1,000 registrants will receive a ‘swag box!’
Only the first 1,000 registrations prior to Jan. 13th will receive a ‘swag box!’ Register early for the full-conference experience.
Last day for conference registration – Jan. 23rd. Late registrants receive full experience, minus conference ‘swag box.’
If you’re ready to experience the first online conference exclusively for Art Teachers, breathe easy because we’ve made the sign-up process as absolutely simple as possible, with only 3 short steps!
1) Register – Completing this simple registration form will ensure we have your contact information on file in order to send you regular updates, send SWAG via snail mail and email, and also contact you as necessary leading up to the big event. Each attendee must have a registration form on file. This only takes about 2 minutes to complete!
2) Pay – If you’re paying to attend the conference yourself, simply click the ‘buy now’ button and enter your credit card information via the secure AOE Store. Once your payment is cleared, you’re all set to attend! It’s really that easy. This step only takes about 3 minutes.
I'm paying for the conference myself.
My school is paying. (Click here for PO information)
- The name of the person who the Invoice should be to the attention of (who handles the PO’s?)
- Their email address for us to send the PO out to.
- School Name, Address and phone number
- Name of the person who is attending the conference (that would be you, the art teacher)
Once you send this information to firstname.lastname@example.org, We will send an invoice out to your school via email and copy you on the correspondence so you can stay in the loop.
You will also need to complete the registration form on your own, linked below in the “Register” section. This way, you will get regular updates on conference information directly in YOUR inbox. If multiple teachers are attending from one school, we can put them together on one invoice, but each individual teacher will need to fill out a registration form.
Important! If the name on your credit card (or school’s card) does’t match the name you registered with, you will need to clarify this by emailing email@example.com and stating who the payment is for. This is very important so you don’t miss a beat with exclusive conference updates in your inbox.
3) Attend – Prior to the big day, January 25th, we will send you an exclusive link and access code. Using this link and code, you’ll be able to access the live conference and all of the conference-exclusive content through any internet-enabled computer. You won’t need to install any complicated software, and any modern computer will do the job. If you’re browsing The Art of Education right now, you’re computer likely has all it needs to attend the conference!
One of the worst feelings ever is when you take all the time, effort, and money to attend a conference only to be left disappointed at the end of the day because A)You were only allowed to attend a select few of the presentations available and B)That only one or two of the presentations you DID attend were worth their salt.
The AOE Online Conference is different. First, you will get to attend ALL of the presentations. Since they all happen in sequential order, and there are no rooms to find, you can attend every presentation if you want to. Second, each and every presentation included in the conference is 100% AOE curated content. We’ve hand-selected each presentation (K-12 content) and each presenter to be ‘Ridiculously Relevant Professional Development’ just for you.
Scan some of the presentations below. New presentations will be added periodically, so stay tuned! We have lots more to share The finalized schedule including times will be posted prior to January 1st. We are thrilled to welcome a variety of presenters, including your favorite art ed bloggers, award winning art teachers, and of course members of our AOE Team. Some people fly across the country to hear these people speak, but now, you don’t have to!
'The Modern Art Teacher's Survival Guide' - Jessica Balsley (Founder, AOE)
This presentation will walk you through the essential ‘Survival Guide” for art teachers. From traveling between schools, classes overloaded with students, art time being slashed in half, and more expectations like common core, assessments, and data hanging over our heads, it seems we will never get back to simpler times. No fear! You can’t control everything, but you CAN fill your bag of tricks to cope with the changes and come out victorious. This presentation will re-affirm your faith that teaching art IS indeed the best job in the world: once we sort through and conquer the rubble that tries to cloud it.
'Don't Just Make Art, Play Art! Learning Games for the Art Classroom' - Erica Stinziani (Blogger, Art Project Girl)
And get ready to hear me sing! I will show you how song can cement art vocabulary in all students minds (even ELL!) This is a jam packed ten minutes on how to use “play” art in your classroom to promote classroom community and learning! All the games, songs and activities are appropriate for the elementary classroom and most easily adaptable for the middle and high school classrooms.
Erica Stinziani is a RISD graduate with her Masters in Conflict Transformation. She teaches elementary art at an inner city school with a large ELL population. You can read more about her adventures of teaching art on her blog: www.artprojectgirl.com
'5 Easy Ways to Empower Your Students' - Nic Hahn (Blogger, Mini Matisse)
'Teach Your Students to Paint on the iPad' - Pam Dalton (Art Educator and iPad Artist)
'Houses of Hope.... a Social Cause Fundraiser Project' - Cheryl Trowbridge (Blogger, Teach Kids Art)
In this session you’ll learn how to choose a social cause your students can get excited about. Then I’ll walk you through the steps of creating a charming “house magnet” project that’s proven successful across every grade level. This is easy enough for Kinders to do (with a little help), yet it’s so fun and appealing that parents will be asking, “Can I make one, too?!” I’ll show you simple, inexpensive materials (and one “secret ingredient”!) that make it possible for most of your proceeds to go directly to your cause. And last, but not least, I’ll show you creative ways to get all your magnets sold!
Whether you want to support an orphanage far away or a child battling cancer in your own town, your students will learn how a little creativity can go a long way when it comes to helping others!
