Plaster masks are fun to make. Whether you use a plaster facial mold or a real face, students will love this lesson. It’s always amazing to me how involved students become in the designing and creating of their masks. Students bring in materials from home, share with their peers, and glow throughout this lesson. I’m always amazed at the unique themes they pick and how proud they are of their final products.

To introduce the lesson, I introduce the history of masks. Sometimes I have the local art museum bring in different masks and give a presentation to the students. If they’re unabailable, I give my own presentation using images. Once you create a presentation, you can use it again and again.

Be sure to check out this great presentation on the history of masks from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The presentation is an excellent resource for you to use if you want to prepare a PowerPoint or other presentation for the introduction to masks. However, use the presentation with discretion. I personally wouldn’t show this video in my classroom due the nudity and commentary.
