This lesson plan is a perfect way to work in a “wintery” project while still teaching important art skills and concepts. Students will compare and contrast two types of architecture, then come up with original castle drawings, challenging their design skills. I teach my third graders about Russian Architecture, then add this project in 4th grade to build on those skills, but the project would work just as well with any other types of architecture you might teach! To keep things interesting, I have students do a lot of fun compare and contrast games on my interactive whiteboard system. You can also work in some really great vocabulary here like onion dome, gargoyle, and spire!

This great Art Ed lesson plan is 100% FREE to download! Use it in your classroom and share with your colleagues. For more free lessons like this one, visit our Lessons Page and download them all!

Love how you’ve combined the idea of a winter scene with architecture. I’ve not seen that before.Although I have made a cheaper version of scratch paper using white thick cardstock, oil pastel below and black paint mixed with some dishwasher liquid covering the pastel. Love the lesson!

Thanks, Ella! Great idea about making your own scratch-art paper!
