Let’s face it, the people who design school buildings don’t have one artist bone in their bodies. Gray cinderblock hallways lined with drab colored lockers are the daily site for students who walk to class everyday.

As art teachers, we yearn to spruce up these dull pathways. We long to gather a group of kids and create an intricate mural to break up the monotony. But murals are costly, time consuming and permanent. Not to mention that receiving permission to create one can be difficult.

Did you know, an inexpensive, fun and non permanent solution to decorating our hallways sits right in the art supply bin? We can literally take a lesson from modern day street artist Buff Diss and utilize a very common art material in a new, non traditional manner. It’s time to decorate our school with masking tape murals.

The final results will receive a lot of attention from both students and staff. The only disappointing part will come later when it’s time to take down their artwork.

I am thinking of having students do practice with broken spaghetti noodles glued to grid paper so they can understand how to manipulate straight lines into curves and have a prototype to work from.
