This is an excellent lesson to use for an art fundraiser such as Square 1 or Art to Remember.  Students draw an animal, or symbol of their choice.  They cut it out and layer multiple times.  Once their center image is complete, they repeat the process for the background pattern.  I have taught this lesson using various background sizes.  I currently have my students use 8’x8’ square paper.  Although it is possible to use larger paper, it’s more time consuming.

Accommodations:  Allow a student to print off a clip art image to use for their center symbol instead of having them draw the symbol.
