3 Easy Ways to Help Students Connect to Art History

Do you ever have trouble helping students connect with art history? A photo of a beautiful painting or sculpture is a great start, but to really help kids feel invested you may need to take it a step further. In today’s video, I have three simple tips to make old artwork come alive for students.

My favorite tip is the map. So many kids have a distorted perception of the world, and by really trying to show them where art comes from, I know it will help them connect in new ways. Every art teacher needs a map and a globe within easy access of everyday conversations!

I agree about the movies. I don’t show many of them, but I think the kids connect better with the videos. I find the books to be rather long and I use a sheet to help them focus on the key points. I am amazed how much they re-call. This went well for me, so far, this year in 2nd grade. Showing the Cassatt movie to 1st didn’t go over as well, even though I limited it to 5 minutes.
