Thanks for the post! During the summer I work as a camp counselor, and being a trained art teacher I lead the daily arts/crafts projects. This past week at camp has been “Holiday Week” and yesterday was ‘Independence Day’ so I had the campers re-design the American flag using red, white, and blue paper. I told them they could use the flag as inspiration but try to come up with something new. They could also incorporate other flags into their design (alot of them come from a strong Polish heritage as well as other nationalities). Some of their designs were really amazing-one girl even made a ‘USA’ design in 3-D paper!

That sounds awesome! I think that open ended assignment was perfect for the kids when using such an iconic subject. Well done.

Thank you! It definitely was fun and interesting to see what the kids came up with…some didn’t stray too far from the classic flag design, but the ones who came up with different  ideas had some great ones!
