This lesson is one of my favorites because it combines three important concepts for students. Color theory, use of a new material (oil pastels) and art history learning about Picasso. Students are always impressed when they are finished and proud of what they have accomplished. I have done this lesson in both 3rd and 4th grade, but 4th seems to be the sweet spot for success with this lesson. You can use other shapes to trace in the middle (circles were just easiest). In the past I have used a leaf, or, to up the creativity factor or work on contour line, you could have students make their own tracer shape/design.

This great Art Ed lesson plan is 100% FREE to download! Use it in your classroom and share with your colleagues. For more free lessons like this one, visit our Lessons Page and download them all!

What an awesome lesson plan! Jessica, do all your lesson plans follow this format (with a photograph of the final product)? I can’t imagine doing so much work!

My goal was to eventually have all my lesson plans do this, but it’s a lot of work, you are right, so I’m not there yet. It was sure nice to just print some of them out when I had a long term sub on maturity leave, though.

I’m sorry but when I click where it says to click to download, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

That is really strange! I just tried it, and it works fine. When you click on the image of the lesson plan, it should take you directly to this link: http://www.theartofed.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Warm-Cool-Picasso2.pdf Perhaps your downloads are set to go to a hidden ‘downloads’ folder?
      I hope this helps!

Just tried it again – nothing happens. My downloads don’t go to a hidden folder but when I clicked your link in your message above, it took me to that particular lesson. Not sure what’s going on…

I clicked on it too, and it works just fine! Is the download opening up in a new window?

I tried opening the lessons again but via a different browser (Internet Explorer) and it worked. It still doesn’t work with my usual Firefox…
