This lesson is one of my favorites because it combines three important concepts for students. Color theory, use of a new material (oil pastels) and art history learning about Picasso. Students are always impressed when they are finished and proud of what they have accomplished. I have done this lesson in both 3rd and 4th grade, but 4th seems to be the sweet spot for success with this lesson. You can use other shapes to trace in the middle (circles were just easiest). In the past I have used a leaf, or, to up the creativity factor or work on contour line, you could have students make their own tracer shape/design.
