It’s Reggio Week!

This week I want to talk about something that gets me very motivated and excited to be a better teacher- The Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.  This week I’ll be sharing with you some Reggio Basics, tips and tricks, as well as linking you to some excellent resources and blogs on the web that will help you dig deeper in knowledge and application to this approach- and I’ll also help you apply it to your own teaching.

Why Reggio Week?

Over the past summer months I’ve been deep in Reggio research, preparing for the upcoming AOE Class, Rethinking Kindergarten, which starts on December 1st.  This is the VERY FIRST time Rethinking Kindergarten will be taught. I just can’t wait!  See the course description below in case you missed it on our Classes Page.

This class explores some of the most renowned preschools in the world, the preschools of Reggio Emilia in Italy.  These preschools value the arts as an equal partner to the other academic subjects, provide rich interdisciplinary curriculum, and boast a full time art teacher who works in direct conjunction with the regular classroom teacher. Sound like a dream?

Too often, art teachers are unsure how to handle teaching kindergarten, especially when we teach such a wide range of age levels in one week.  Did you notice kindergarten is becoming the next 1st grade?  Should kindergarten students sit for 90 minutes at a time in their seats?  Though this class, you will explore research findings from these famous schools.  You will apply this knowledge to re-think the way you teach early childhood students in the kindergarten art room.  This course will allow you to directly apply your learning by giving you time to revamp your kindergarten lessons to better-fit student developmental needs.  Join us as we rethink kindergarten, the Reggio way!

 Participants in this course will need a copy of the book “The Hundred Languages of Children: The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education” by Edwards, Gandini and Forman. 


This is a course you do not want to miss!  You might be asking yourself how a public school teacher can apply such an abstract and intertwined concept of education to a system that seems to already be set in stone.  Well, let me say that one of the reasons I am so excited to teach this class is because we take a well-known approach, and gives you manageable ways to incorporate bits and pieces of the philosophy of this system into your traditional classroom. Too often we get stuck in this all or nothing approach to change.  Implementing something new doesn’t have to be that way and I will be there with you to show you just how you can improve your Early Childhood art classes today!

Yes, December is a super busy month for everyone with the holiday season, I totally understand that.  Here at AOE we aim to making everything simple and manageable for teachers, which is why we created this platform in the first place. The due dates for this December course attempt to work around the holiday season. You’ll get all of the assignments right up front, so you can work on them when YOU have time, there are no mysteries here!

    I’m glad to see Reggio is getting more attention. My daughter now “hates” art, as a five year old who changed schools from a Reggio-inspired nursery school to a public school. I’m dismayed to hear this from her.
