Lesson: Value Still Life

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Art Elements: Value, Shape, Form

Art Skills: Drawing, Value, Blending and Shading

Making Connections: Math (3D form)

I set up a still life on my Elmo, (document camera) so all of the students are seeing the same thing with the same lighting. Then, I have them draw the shapes on grey paper (gives them the middle value so it makes the lights and darks more evident).  The kids add the darks and the lights to create a really successful value still life drawing.

Before I do this, students practice with value in a packet.

      Hi Susan!
Thanks for your comment! :) I am glad you are finding some of the information useful. I plan to share my activity packets soon- Should be in a form you can download once I put the whole lesson into a handy PDF. Unitl then, what the handout includes are blank 3D shapes (cone, sphere and cylinder) students can practice shading on those. The packet also contains squares in a row for students to make their own value scale experimenting with different materials, such as pencil, colored pencil and charcoal. Hope it helps and keep in touch!
