Lesson: ROYGBIV Collage

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Art Elements: Color, line

Art Skills: Painting, Cutting, Gluing, Rainbow Order

Making Connections: Science

Students LOVE to listen to the song ROY G BIV by Greg Percy while they paint these.  Students are learning about rainbow order by painting the colors of the rainbow in order. Then, they dissect their paintings by cutting different line types.  Like a puzzle, students glue the pieces back together. The cutting and gluing is always a challenge, but great practice for the little kinder hands.

Yikes, this was pretty hard to figure out how to help a majority of the kids be successful. I think it would have been easier to pain the black stripe or had made it advance w/ oil pastel. I love the idea of cutting and gluing, but I could tell the kinders were pretty stressed. Any tips?

Sometimes If I think a project may be overwhelming to my students I do the challenging part in small groups where I model it for each group. It also helps if there isn’t a time limit so they can take their time. Erica A
