Rule-ing the Roost

In the second installment of this week’s  “Organizing Extravaganza” here on AOE, I want to talk about rules and procedures in the art room.  There is no way around it! As art teachers we have many groups throughout a week, and on that first or second week of school, we must go over the rules and procedures of the art room. If you are like me you go over them 25 times in a week. Ugh!

One that I have done to make it more bearable is to create a power point with visuals explaining what procedures look like in the art room.  I have even seen teachers set their voice to the slides as they talk about the rules. The kids think it’s like a movie and it really helps to engage them through what could be quite boring!

I go over how I expect students to come into the art room.

My rules and consequences for actions. I try to keep them very simple.

I also show procedures for clean up and storing art supplies.  Because I have no time between my classes, I need to be able to trust the students to help me.  I will talk more about how I organize all of the art supplies around the room later next week, so stay tuned!

What are some unique ways that you explain rules and procedures to your students?
